Art and Science
"I do think that true science is not going to destroy art, for example, but should be an enhancement of it.  There's no reason why science has to be a bitter, hard, cruel kind of thing." -- Julian Jaynes, The Julian Jaynes Collection

This is from a question and answer period following a lecture given in 1978.  Hopefully we all know the truth of this by now, and yet "science fiction" is still segregated from "literature."

I was further struck by the quote because Jaynes' theories have been an enduring source of inspiration for my work--as an artist.

I don't think it's science that sets science fiction apart.

Romance, fantasy, other "pulp" genres are shelved alongside literary novels. If it's not the science that sets sf apart, what is it?

Maybe I should think again...
